When soil dries out in a heatwave, it becomes hydrophobic.
This doesn't mean it's suddenly terrified of water. It means the soil has basically waxed itself shut, making it impossible for moisture to soak down to the roots.
Think of a freshly waxed car. When water hits it, it pulls into tight little beads and rolls straight off the paint.
Now imagine throwing a bucket of soapy water over that same car. The surface tension breaks. The water stops beading, sheets out completely flat, and clings to the surface.
That is exactly what a wetting agent does for your lawn.
