How to Measure Your Lawn by Counting Fence Panels
In the UK, standard wooden fence panels are almost universally 6 feet wide, which converts to approximately 1.83 metres. We recommend rounding up to 2 metres per panel which allows for the fence post and margin for error.
Step 1: Find the Length Count the number of fence panels running alongside the longest edge of your grass. Multiply this number by 2m (6.5ft). (If the grass ends halfway down a panel, count it as 0.5).
Step 2: Find the Width Count the number of panels running along the shortest edge of your grass. Multiply this number by 2m (6.5ft).
Step 3: Calculate Total Area Multiply your total length by your total width to get your lawn's total area.
Quick Example: Imagine your lawn is 5 panels long and 3 panels wide:
-
Length: 5 panels × 2m (6.5ft) = 10m (32.5ft)
-
Width: 3 panels × 2m (6.5ft) = 6m (19.5ft)
-
Total Area: 10m × 6m = 60 sqm (634 sqf)
